Why This Reference Exists
Charleston County records did not disappear when printed directories stopped being a common starting point. They are held in separate systems. The county Assessor and Register of Deeds cover parcels and recorded ownership, while voter information has its own South Carolina access rules. Historical names and addresses are also found through the Charleston County Public Library's South Carolina Room and state archives. We assembled the relevant search paths, office contacts, coverage notes, and access limits in one local reference.
What the Directory Points To
- Searches by need: the street directory for address-keyed records, the city directory for historical volumes, and the resident lookup for a one-person search
- Custodians and collections: the Assessor, Register of Deeds, elections officials, Clerk of Court, vital-records offices, and local-history collections
- Practical routes: ways to follow an address, interpret a directory listing, and compare a household across available years
- Access boundaries: what South Carolina law makes available, what remains restricted, and how to direct a request to the right custodian
What We Cannot Do
This is a privately operated reference site, not a Charleston County office, South Carolina agency, court, library, or records custodian. Its limits are clear:
- We cannot verify that a particular person currently lives in Charleston County
- We cannot retrieve, certify, or amend a record for you
- We cannot place anyone on, or remove anyone from, a public roll or database
- We do not provide legal advice about records or disputes
- We cannot guarantee that every linked office detail, coverage period, or web address is current
Only the record custodian can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing obtained through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
